Total number of smartphones submitted from 2019 to 2023
Updated by: Ryan Douglas, Oct 14, 2024
From 2019 to 2023, the overall number of FCC IDs belonging to smartphones decreased by 28%. With the top companies also showing staggering sales growth in the same period, this could confirm the smartphone market has reached a plateau.
Pandemic effects on manufacturing
The decline to 865 submissions in 2020 likely correlates with the onset of the global pandemic, which disrupted supply chains and consumer demand. Companies were forced to put plans on hold, adjust their strategies, and focus more on existing product lines rather than launching new models. 2021 stayed mostly flat with 854 submissions, suggesting that while the market remained active, manufacturers were still navigating the lingering effects of the pandemic and recalibrating their strategies.
Golden days of the past
The increase to 912 submissions in 2022 likely indicates a rebound in market activity, driven by pent-up demand and a gradual return to normalcy. 740 different IDs were submitted in 2023, the lowest since 2007. Just before the industry increased more than two-fold during the 2010’s.
