Early Exploration: 2013-2015
Between 2013 and 2015, FCC submissions ranged from 7 to 10 each year. This was the period when smart glasses first hit the market, with early products like Google Glass capturing public attention. Companies were experimenting with designs and technology to find their footing in this new category.
Steady Growth & Experimentation: 2016-2017
Submissions rose in 2016 and 2017, reaching 15 and then 18. During this time, there was an increase in product investment, with more companies testing new features like augmented reality, gesture controls, and connectivity. The growth suggests that manufacturers were optimistic about smart glasses becoming more mainstream.
Building Market Momentum: 2018-2023
After a dip in 2018 to 7 submissions, the market saw a renewed interest in 2019 and 2020 with 8 and 12 submissions, respectively. But 2021 marked a turning point with 21 submissions. Indicating that smart glasses were gaining momentum as a product category. 2022 then showed more promise, reflecting excitement around AR advancements. While innovation in smart glasses continues, the market is stabilizing as companies refine their product lines and focus on viable use cases.
