Number of Apple iPhone FCC IDs Over Time
Updated by: Ryan Douglas, Oct 16, 2024
This dataset tracks Apple iPhone FCC ID submissions from 2013 to 2023. Below is a breakdown of the data over the last decade.
Early bring-up during 2013-2015
From 2013 to 2015, Apple was building momentum with the iPhone. The iPhone 5s and 5c were launched in 2013 (6 submissions), followed by the iPhone 6, and 6 Plus (2 submissions) in 2014 and the 6s, and 6s Plus in 2015. During this time, Apple was focused on improving its core models with fewer versions across different regions. This likely helped set the stage for bigger changes later in the decade.
Expansion and diversification for 2016-2020
Starting in 2016, the number of FCC submissions grew as Apple expanded its product lineup. 2016 saw 11 submissions for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, which introduced new features like water resistance and the removal of the headphone jack. This trend continued into 2020, when the iPhone 12 series, with 5G support and four different models, led to 18 FCC submissions. This growth shows Apple's focus on offering more choices in its lineup, like the Mini and Pro Max models.
Advanced technology and broader offerings in 2021-2023
For these past few years, Apple has kept a high number of FCC submissions with the release of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15. These products introduced features like satellite emergency calling, the infamous Dynamic Island feature, and the switch to USB-C (starting with iPhone 15).
